How to choose between them

Listening beats reading, so use this short routine.

  1. Start with type

Decide female, male or neutral for your project. Press play on two or three of that type.

  2. Test your own line

Paste the first line of your real script and generate it in your top two voices.

The Studio voice list with the All, Female and Male filters and a play button on every voice
Filter the voices, press play to hear one, and pick it.
  3. Check the long read

If your plan allows it, generate a full paragraph. A voice you like in one sentence can tire you in a minute.

Writing for a British voice

A UK voice reads your words with a British accent, whatever spelling you use. These habits help it sound natural.

Tips for scripts read by a British voice
TopicTip
DatesWrite “15 March 2026” or “the fifteenth of March”
MoneyWrite “twelve pounds fifty”, not “£12.50”
TimesWrite “half past three” or “three thirty”
NamesRespell unusual names the way they sound
PausesAdd [pause 500ms] between ideas to get a measured, British-style pace

Writing a dialogue for British voices

A voice tag in square brackets switches the speaker. That lets you write a short exchange with two British voices in one script.

Sample dialogues for British voices

A shop assistant and a customerAlice and Daniel[Alice] Can I help you? [pause 500ms] [Daniel] I am looking for a gift.
A tutor and a studentEmma and Lewis[Emma] Shall we begin? [pause 500ms] [Lewis] Yes, I am ready.
A host and a guestIsabella and George[Isabella] Welcome to the show. [pause 500ms] [George] Thank you for having me.

Every example is under 150 characters, so it works on the free plan.

Download sizes and neutral voices

The Kokoro voices (Alice, Emma, Isabella, Lily, Daniel, Fable, George and Lewis) show a download size of about 92 MB in the Studio. The two Cori voices come from a different engine, Piper, and have their own sizes. Your browser downloads a voice once and keeps it.

If you like to compare, generate the same script in Cori (high) and Cori (medium), and listen. Quality level and size are shown side by side in the Studio.

British voices for learning content

  • Keep the pace steady. Lower the Speed slider a little for new material.
  • Pause after instructions. A [pause 1s] gives learners time to act.
  • Use one voice per course. Changing the voice between lessons can distract.
  • Test a whole paragraph. A voice that works in one sentence may not suit a long lesson.

There is more about how pauses work on the text to speech with pauses page.

The short version

  • Ten UK voices: Alice, Emma, Isabella and Lily; Daniel, Fable, George and Lewis; and Cori in two qualities.
  • Listen first: every voice has a sample on this page.
  • Test your own line before you commit to a voice.
  • Spell out dates, money and times so they are read as you intend.
  • Free to try: 300 characters, one time, with no card.

If your audience is split, you can use a British voice for some pieces and an American one for others. Just keep one accent per series.

Mistakes to avoid with UK voices

  • Writing US dates and money. “3/4/2026” and “$12.50” can be read in ways you do not expect. Spell them out.
  • Expecting a regional accent. UK voices have a British English accent. They do not offer regional accents, such as Scottish or Welsh.
  • Skipping the test. A voice you love in a one-line sample can read your own script differently.
  • Forgetting the licence. The standard voices are licensed for commercial use. See text to speech for commercial use.
