How far 300 characters goes
Three hundred characters is about three or four sentences. That is enough to find a voice you like and test it on your own words. It is not enough for a long narration, and the free plan is not meant to be.
- Make your first script a test. Try your real opening line in two or three voices.
- Pick a voice by ear. Use the play arrow in the Studio to hear a sample before you spend characters.
- Do not repeat yourself. A generated voice-over lands in your History, so you can play it again without using more characters.

All 38 voices are free to try
The free plan is not a smaller set of voices. You get all 38 standard English voices: 28 with a US accent and 10 with a UK accent. The standard voices page has a sample of each, so you can listen before you make an account.
The honest parts
- You need an account. It is free, and you do not enter a card.
- You credit Clonylab when you share. On the free plan, the credit is “Made with Clonylab”.
- English only. Clonylab has no other languages.
- The first use of a voice downloads it. Your browser keeps the files after that.
- History lives in your browser. If you clear your site data, your history goes too.
When to move from free to Pro
Pro makes sense when you hit one of these.
| You notice | Pro gives you |
|---|---|
| Scripts longer than 150 characters | No script limit |
| You have used 300 characters | Unlimited characters |
| You want more than 3 cloned voices | Unlimited cloned voices |
| You want an AI app to make voice-overs for you | The AI connection (MCP) |
| You do not want the credit line | No credit line |
If you work with other people, text to speech for teams explains the Team plan. And if “unlimited” makes you cautious, unlimited text to speech spells out what it means.
Five free scripts worth trying
You have 300 characters, and each script can hold 150. Here are five lines, each under 150 characters, that tell you something different about a voice.
| What it tests | Script | Listen for |
|---|---|---|
| Plain reading | Thanks for watching. See you in the next one. | Is the voice easy to listen to? |
| Pauses | First, open the app. [pause 1s] Then press the green button. | Does the silence feel natural? |
| Questions | Have you ever lost an hour to a task that should take five minutes? | Does the pitch rise at the right place? |
| Numbers | Your order 4821 ships on 15 March for 24 dollars. | Are the numbers clear? |
| Pace | Here is the key point: [slow]take your time.[/slow] | Does the slow part sound intentional? |
Two of these use up around 100 characters each. You will not have enough for all five on the free plan, so pick the two that match your work.
What to ask any “free” text to speech tool
Free tools vary a lot. These questions help you compare, and here is how Clonylab answers each.
| Question | Clonylab |
|---|---|
| Do I need an account? | Yes, free, no card |
| Is there a character limit? | Yes. 300 characters one time, 150 per script |
| Are all voices available? | Yes, all 38 |
| Can I download the audio? | Yes, MP3 and WAV |
| Is the audio uploaded? | No. It is made in your browser |
| Can I use it commercially? | Standard voices are licensed for it; credit Clonylab on the free plan |
| Which languages? | English only |
Ask the same questions of every tool you try. The answers tell you more than the price does.
An hour of work on the free plan and on Pro
It helps to picture a real working hour. Say you are making a 3-minute explainer video.
| Free plan | Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Script length | Cut into 150-character lines, limited to 300 characters in total | Paste the whole script |
| Voices to compare | All 38, but few characters to test them | All 38, with unlimited testing |
| Finished audio | A short clip for a test | The full narration |
| Credit when you share | “Made with Clonylab” | None |
The free plan answers “will I like this?”. Pro answers “can I finish my project here?”. More about text to speech online and text to speech MP3 shows how the working steps go.
How to get a good result from a short script
Short scripts have no room for mistakes, so small writing choices matter more. Here are five rules, each with a before and after.
| Rule | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Say it the way you speak | We are delighted to announce the launch. | We just launched. Come and look. |
| Spell numbers as words | It costs $24.50. | It costs twenty-four fifty. |
| Add one pause | Thanks for watching see you soon. | Thanks for watching. [pause 1s] See you soon. |
| Keep one idea per sentence | Our app, which runs in your browser, is free and also private. | Our app is free. It runs in your browser. |
| Cut the filler | In this video I am going to show you how to open the app. | Here is how to open the app. |
Counting characters is easy to forget. The counter under the script box shows them as you type, so edit until the number is under 150.
What people use the free plan for
| Use | Example script | What you get out of it |
|---|---|---|
| Picking a voice for a project | Your real opening line | You choose before you pay |
| Checking pronunciation | A line with a hard name | You learn which words to respell |
| A quick voice note | A greeting for a slide | A real MP3 or WAV |
| Hearing your own clone | One plain sentence | A first impression of the clone |
| Showing a colleague | A product line | Something to hear, instead of a description |
